Club Meeting 27th April, 2021 - Another Savvy Speaker Line-Up

Another week, and another excellent meeting with thought provoking speeches and an opportunity to learn a little more about one of our newest members. Toastmaster for the evening, Qaya, warmed us up by asking us about our highlight of the week, many of which focused on simple life pleasures.

This week, our three prepared speeches came from Ron, Steve, and Bruce. Ron’s speech entitled Process and Procedures referred to the Douglas Bader quote, ‘Rules are for the guidance of wise men and the obedience of fools’ to explore the options for using process and procedures to attain your goals. Steve’s speech was an experiment in constructing propositions on collaboration based on engaging the audience and developing the speech based on their responses, on the fly. Bruce’s Icebreaker speech, Learning New Skills was about his journey in building confidence, finding his passion, and seeking to improve his speaking skills. Our evaluators were Kirsty (making her evaluation debut), Chris, and Richard.

For Table Topics, Topicsmaster Islay challenged the participants to respond to emails received with apparently random subjects. Sania was this week’s Table Topics Champion (for the second time in 2021) who revealed that the topic behind her email to Islay titled, I want to share with you some new things’ was that despite being encouraged to get a pet, she hated them!

Ian was our Grammarian and he chose savvy as the Word of the Day which is defined as, to understand or get the sense of (an idea, etc.); shrewd; well-informed by collinsdictionary.com. Well done to everyone who weaved the word into their speech.

Of particular note was Bruce taking on the role of Sergeant at Arms / Zoom Master as well as delivering his Icebreaker speech. Well done to Bruce, to all the speakers, and members taking roles for the meeting.
