Contests offer you the chance to practice particular skills in an exciting and unique environment.

Table topics contest

Time: 1 to 2 minutes in length.

Impromptu speaking. All contestants are taken out of the room and brought back in one by one to speak on the same topic, which should be general in nature and not require specialised knowledge.

Since no contestant hears the topic before his turn to speak on it, you can judge their impromptu speaking abilities by the way in which each person's effort stacks up against the others.

The winner goes onto area level and the contest itself goes as far as the UK and Ireland district.

Humorous speech contest

Time: 5 to 7 minutes.

Your chance to stand up and try out some completely original humour! It must be your material and clean - no 'blue' humour!

The winner goes onto area level and the contest itself goes as far as the UK and Ireland district.

Evaluation contest

Evaluating someone else speak. Contestants watch the same speech and then leave the room to prepare their evaluations of it. After five minutes, the contestants relinquish all writing materials. One by one, each contestant receives back their own notes, returns to the contest room, and evaluates the speaker.

The winner goes onto area level and the contest itself goes as far as the UK and Ireland district.

International speech contest

Time: 5 to 7 minutes.

Any topic at all, so long as it's original. It can be funny or serious, although it is generally aimed at 'inspiring the audience'. It should be the best speech you can give, and it must be original.

The reason this contest is called 'International Speech' instead of 'General Speech' or 'Miscellaneous Speech' is because it's the only one of the five contests that goes as far as the World level.
